Beijingers adapt to electronic passes to ride
北京公交开始使用电子月票

By Li Fangchao (China Daily)
Updated: 2006-05-11 06:28

Once a habit is formed, it can be a little hard to break.

The scene was a little chaotic at some bus stops during the rush hours yesterday as Beijing formally scrapped its decades-long paper monthly passes for public transport and replaced them with an automatic fare collection (AFC) system.

The nearly 1.5 million monthly pass users on the bus and the 200,000 on the metro now have to use palm-sized "smart" cards instead.

A passenger without a card may still buy a paper ticket to ride.

Passengers used to be allowed to enter any door of a bus, but now they are required to enter through the front door (or the middle door on buses with three doors) because that's where the AFC machine is usually installed. They must exit using the back door (or the front and back doors of a three-door bus).

And on the first day, some residents of this metropolis with more than 14 million people obviously could not get used to the slight but abrupt change.

"I agree it is convenient to use a card," said Zhao Tianbao, 62, a local resident on a No 62 bus, "but absolutely not at rush hour."

Zhao cited the No 300, which circles the Third Ring Road as an example: "Though the bus is very big, at rush hour it is extremely difficult to get on the bus as people now just swarm to enter through the front door."

Liang Yiran and Li Shanshan, both 17-year-old students, said they were late for school today because of the crowded situation in the morning.

"I wonder why they can't install machines at both doors," Liang said.

Cai Fen, a conductor on the No 62 bus, which operates between Jiangzhuanghu and the Yonghegong metro station, said that the change yesterday did not save her any work.

"I have to keep reminding people to enter from the front door at each stop and keep a close eye on those who use the card whether they used it correctly," she said.

"But that is understandable," Cai said. "After all, it is the first day."

More than 1,100 buses were added to the 84 busiest lines of the city to alleviate the pressure during the rush hours, the Xinhua News Agency quoted Li Xiaosong, deputy director of the Beijing Transportation Commission, as saying.

Foreseeing the possible confusion, the Beijing Municipal Committee of Communication arranged 4,000 "order maintainers" at the city's most crowded bus stops.

What's more railings were erected at most stops to organize queueing passengers.

Police detains rock singer Dou Wei

警察拘留摇滚歌手窦唯

(Shanghai Daily)
Updated: 2006-05-12 09:41

Beijing police detained Dou Wei, a Chinese rock 'n' roll pioneer, for alleged arson this morning after he went out of control in the newsroom of Beijing News yesterday, and set fire to a car in front of the office, media reported today.

Dou is also well known for being the ex-husband of Chinese pop diva Faye Wong.

He entered the newsroom yesterday to file a complaint about a reporter surnamed Zhuo, and his story about Dou and his second wife Gao Yuan's life and economic status.

Senior editors and law department heads from the paper attempted to comfort and calm him down for two hours, promising to look into the issue, however, Dou couldn't control his temper and began breaking office equipment, computers, TV's and splashed water on some employees.

The newspaper employees had to call Dou's friends to take him away.

But Dou returned to the newsroom later, pouring some liquid onto a car in front of the office, and then set it on fire. The papers employees put out the fire immediately and no one was hurt.

The police soon arrived to take Dou and others involved to the police station for questioning. Beijing News reported today that Dou may be charged with committing arson.

Beijing News later published a statement saying the stories they originally published about Dou were all based on interviews and the truth.

Dou and Wong's marriage formerly aroused intense publicity, especially after they divorced. The divorce was reportedly caused by Dou's affair with Gao, who was his former lover before he married Wong. Gao later became his second wife.

However, Dou and Gao ended up divorcing. Wong recently married a Chinese actor, Li Yapeng and they are expecting their first baby early next week.

个人比较喜欢窦唯,昨天看新闻知道他大闹新京报,觉得实在很过瘾.下了魔岩三杰当年出的一个专集5CD装的珍藏版.
今天北京下雨,又是自在的一天.

本期内容: Unit One Tourism in China -- 3. The Great Wall

引用:

3.The Great Wall

The Great Wall, which is composed of fortresses[1], walls, terraces[2] and beacon towers[3] runs 6,300km. across five provinces. It was constructed in the Warring States Period[4] of the 5th century B.C. by three states, Yan, Zhao, and Qin, as a defense against each other and against the nomads[5] further north. After Qin Shi Huang, the First Emperor of the Qin dynasty, unified China in the 3rd century B.C., sections of the walls were linked and extended. The subsequent Han, Tang, Song, Yuan and Ming dynasties continued to strengthen and extend the wall. Today;s Great Wall—in size, condition and location—is mostly the Ming reconstruction. That such an immense engeering project could be accomplished over high mountains and difficult terrain[6] at a time of less advanced technology makes the Great Wall truly a wonder of world architectural history.

The fortresses of the great Wall, including the important Juyongguan (Dwelling-in-Harmony Pass)[7] at Badaling(Eight Thoroughfare Peaks), are enclosed by several successive walls. Situated at strategic passes, they served as headquaters of the garrison[8]. The Great Wall, averaging seven to eight meters in width, is crowned by battlements[9]. Beyond the wall at regular intervals[10] are beacon towers, mostly standing on hilltops or easily visible sites, which formed a communication system by transmitting messages through signals of smoke or fire to the capital and the major garrisons. Today, the Great Wall attracts tourists from both home and abroad.
